From the recording Reptiles and Monsters

While p[laying the 2015 Paizo Adventure Path "Giantslayer", whose first book happens to be called "The Battle of Bloodmarch Hill", I came across a PDF from a group called The Order of the Amber Die. These gamers, who are by the way all Gen Xers and maybe a few Millenials, run these crazy marathons where they knock out an entire 96 page module in one weekend. That's like 72 hours of gaming with little or no sleep. They also do massively detailed producions with maps, minis, backdrops, costumes, its pretty amazing. And they document it all and put it on the internet.

One of the orignal members, Aerik Lim, wrote a poem for his character called "The Balland of the Bloodmarch" about the battle that was fought in this adventure. When I ran this for my group, I took his poem and set it to music, and performed it on guitar for my group while in character. My group really liked it and I was encourged to work up an arrangement for the band i was in at the time.

The band didn't survive 2020, but this song and my promise to Aerik (who gave me permission to cover his song) to create a proper studio recording of this song stayed in the back of my mind. I'm really glad I waited , because when I wrote this in 2015, I didn't have the knowledge of music production to make anything nearly as cool as what you are about to listen to right now.

May it inspire you to pick up some dice and fight some battles, whether against or with the orcs is totally up to you!

Special thanks to the Order of the Amber Die for helping me secure permission to produce this song, and for also producing such a fantastic resource that I used extensively in my run of Giantslayer.

Lyrics

Bloodmarch (2015)
Lyrics by Aerik Lem
Music by John Mark Orr II
Noonday ends and the drums of war begin.
Main gate is trampled as orcs charge the hill.
Toilday we fight back, but much to our chagrin,
Two of us drop for everyone that’s killed.
The battle of the bloodmarch has begun.
Wealday passes as our boots pound the dirt.
With blood, sweat, and tears we refuse to fall.
Oathday our sanctuary heals the hurt,
Orders to hold call from the Ivory Hall.
Fireday the flame of the fallen burns
For those who we cannot let die in vain.
Starday shines, our will to live returns,
Slaughtering the horde until none remain.
For the only hope we know in this life
Is the one that gleams at the end of a knife.
